Tropical moisture spells lots of rain, cooler temps this week

Monday in Atlanta we tied the all-time record high for May 14 of 91 degrees set back in 1881. This just a day after record-setting heat on Mother's Day. Air quality continued to be a concern with a Code Orange day air quality alert in place, but there is relief on the way in the form of rain.

The FOX 5 Storm Team has been monitoring a tropical low pressure in the Gulf of Mexico over the week. The good Monday afternoon is the National Hurricane Center has lowered the probability of tropical development, but all the moist air has to go somewhere and it looks like it is still heading to Georgia.

It is going to be soggy over the next few days as that system moves into Georgia. There is a high chance of showers and thunderstorms throughout the week.

As of Monday afternoon, that low pressure was located over the eastern Gulf of Mexico, a couple of hundred miles west of Fort Myers, Florida. It has been saturating much of Florida, Cuba and the western Bahamas all weekend.

That low is expected to trek northward, increasing the chance of scattered rain and storms by midday Tuesday. The center of low will slowly drift moving inland over the Florida Panhandle Wednesday night or Thursday. The good news is the further north it goes, the cooler the water, so the likelihood of it turning into a subtropical system is minimal, but still worth tracking.

Regardless, scattered heavy rain and gusty thunderstorms are possible through Friday most numerous in the afternoons and fewer in number in the nights and early mornings. This will help keep temperatures much cooler than they have been. Temperatures will be in the 60s each morning and in the low 80s each afternoon.

Rainfall totals are not excessive on any given day, but over the several-day event, North Georgia could see some portions received two to four inches of rain, with some isolated places seeing even more, over the next four days.

Depend on the FOX 5 Storm Team to keep you updated and safe as we continue through this soggy work week.
