Eight years have passed since the Frederick Douglass Astros finished the football season with a winning record. Tuesday, the team, coached by Rodney Cofield, is in position to make a playoff run. The school is on fire for football again after winning our Team of the Week honors, voting in huge numbers to hold off a surge by Prince Avenue Christian.

Over 327 thousand votes were cast on high5sports.com, forty-one percent of those going to the Astros. Douglass has a rich football tradition, sending six players to the NFL,  including running backs Jamal Lewis and Stanley Pritchett and cornerback Ahmad "Batman" Carroll.

This season, the Astros are 4-2 with a recent homecoming win over arch-rival Washington High School. They'll face another team of the the week, the Therrell Panthers later in the season in a game that could determine playoff positioning in region 4-AAA (Division B).

A Thursday pep rally is scheduled at the school, hosted by FOX 5 Sports and Good Day Atlanta. Expect a party as former Astros Cheerleader (and academic nerd) Karen Graham joins the fun. Karen tweeted out a special message to the Astros Nation this morning writing: "Let's do this thing. I've been waiting for years for this #InYourFace honor."
