Braves name Brian Snitker as manager for 2017

- Brian Snitker, who served as interim manager for the Atlanta Braves after Fredi Gonzalez was fired this season, has been hired to manage the club in 2017. Snitker's contract includes a club option for 2018 as well, the Braves announced Tuesday.

Snitker was named interim manager on May 17. The Braves were 59-65 after Snitker took over, including a 37-35 record after the All Star break. The Braves ended 2016 by winning 20 of their last 30 games.

"Brian earned this opportunity through his dedication to the Braves and to our players. We are excited for the energy and momentum he will bring into SunTrust Park next season," said Braves general manager John Coppolella.

Snitker has been part of the Braves organization for 40 years, spending much of that time managing in the minor leagues. Snitker has also previously served as the Braves' third base coach and bullpen coach.

In addition to Snitker's hiring, the Braves announced their coaching staff for 2017 Tuesday morning. The club is retaining much of its staff from 2016, including bench coach Terry Pendleton, first base coach Eddie Perez, hitting coach Kevin Seitzer, assistant hitting coach Jose Castro and bullpen coach Marty Reed.

Chuck Hernandez has been named pitching coach, replacing Roger McDowell, whose contract was not renewed. Hernandez served as minor league pitching coordinator for the Braves in 2016. For three years before that, he was pitching coach for the Miami Marlins.

Former Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington has been hired as third base coach. During his tenure, the Rangers won American League pennants in 2010 and 2011. Coppolella said of Washington, "Ron's background and success as a major league manager will be an asset to everyone on the club. His tireless work ethic, upbeat attitude and tremendously high baseball IQ will benefit our players and our staff."

Former third base coach Bo Porter will shift into a new role as Special Assistant to the General Manager.
