Atlanta United supporters try and top terrific tifo

It was the tifo that took over the soccer world.

"We wanted to execute on a world level," said Vera Zeigler, "and that's what we did. We accomplished it."

Atlanta United's supporter groups put on a dazzling pre-match display before their MLS Eastern Conference Final home match against the New York Red Bulls. Volunteers spent about five hours the night before the match laying out individual pieces of foil on every seat. That created a tifo -- a pre-match, fan-made piece of artwork -- that's been rarely seen in this country.

The result: a glittering display of red, black and yellow all around Mercedes-Benz Stadium, spelling out "Vamos" on one side and "ATL" on another. After the match, players raved about the display.

"To hear that from them means the world to us," said Zeigler, who is part of the Atlanta United supporter group Resurgence.

Now: try to top that tifo. Resurgence, along with members of supporters' groups Footie Mob, Terminus Legion and The Faction have been working at a downtown Atlanta warehouse on the tifo for the MLS Cup.

They've also had a soundtrack: on Wednesday, the fan groups' drummers and capos -- the men and women who lead chants and songs -- were practicing in the same warehouse.

"I don't know how [we're going to take it up a notch for the final]," said Resurgence board member James Bradley, who also serves as a drummer. "It seems to get louder and louder every week. The main this is, we've got to keep our composure. The crowd is going to be anxious. We all want the title."

The details of the MLS Cup tifo are strictly confidential: FOX 5 agreed to only show close-ups of the work as to not give everything away.

"Expect an amazing display," said Zeigler. "It'll encompass things we've done in the past, with messaging that matches the moment, that motivates, and hopefully puts the finishing touch on an amazing season."

MLS Cup coverage begins exclusively online with an hour-long pre-match show on the FOX 5 Atlanta Facebook page, at FOX5Atlanta.com, and the FOX 5 Atlanta app.
