Woman's shooting death remains a mystery

ATLANTA - Police are searching for the person who shot a woman in northwest Atlanta on Tuesday morning.

Officers said they found a woman shot to death on the stoop of her apartment on Harwell Place. Investigators believe the victim is in her early 30s. Police have canvassed the neighborhood looking to speak to anyone heard anything, but have very little to go on, which is why they're asking for help.

Atlanta Police Homicide Commander Lt. Charles Hampton said he believes neighbors have information police need to figure out who this woman is.

The 911 call came in shortly before 7 a.m. The caller told police a woman was found dead in front of her apartment, shot at least once.

“Right now, we're just asking anyone that heard or saw something to contact homicide or Crime Stoppers,” said Lt. Hampton.

Hampton said they spoke to one person who heard a single gunshot about thirty minutes before the call came into 911, but other than that tip, police have very little.

“We're not sure if we’re looking for a vehicle, we're looking for people on foot so that's really why we need someone to come forward,” said Hampton.

Just a short distance from the woman's apartment is a surveillance camera. It’s not yet known if the shooting was caught on camera.

Neighbors said they didn't see or hear anything, but Hampton said while they may not think they have information, they quite possibly could.

“We think the neighbors may not a little more about her and we can back track and learn a little more about her,” said Hampton.

The woman is described as a black female in her 30's. Her identity hasn't been released yet because authorities are still trying to track down her family.
