COBB COUNTY, Ga. (FOX 5 Atlanta) - A Tennessee woman pleaded guilty Friday to a list of charges after 5-year-old nephew found her loaded gun and shot a 3-year-old in the face last year.
Tashia Woods will spend the next 12 years in prison after pleading guilty to child cruelty, tampering with evidence, reckless conduct and other charges.
Last year on Memorial Day, Woods and a group of family and friends were staying at the Comfort Inn and Suites near SunTrust Park.
Prosecutors said Woods went outside to look for marijuana she'd mistakenly throw away the night before. While she was gone, her 5-year-old nephew found a loaded gun in her bag and accidentally shot a 3-year-old in the face.
The bullet went through the 2-year-old's cheek and knocked out several teeth, but it did not hit his brain.
Prosecutors said after the shooting, Woods hid the gun and left the hotel instead of calling 911.
The man and woman drove off with the children in the car.
Hotel employees called for help and police were able to find the car with the injured child inside and take him to the hospital.
