Bitter cold, strong winds as snow moves out

ATLANTA - Freezing temperatures and icy road conditions forced some north Georgia schools to close again Wednesday morning.  Brief bursts of light snow fell again, mostly in spots north of metro Atlanta.

The biggest concern Wednesday was the snow that melted on Georgia's roadways and refroze overnight. Georgia Department of Transportation crews, as well as municipal trucks, worked to treat the roads and keep them as safe as possible.

The Winter Weather Advisory that had covered much of north Georgia was canceled early Wednesday afternoon.

The highest snowfall amounts reached one to two inches across the advisory area on Tuesday, mainly in areas above 2,000 feet in elevation. Isolated areas saw snowfall amounts greater than two inches.

After some patchy flurries Wednesday morning, skies cleared for the afternoon. But gusty winds and cold temperatures will combine to keep wind chills in the 20s throughout the day.

The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Chill Advisory until 10 a.m. Thursday. Some mountain locations will experience wind chills in the single digits or even below zero. Metro Atlanta will have wind chill values in the low teens overnight.
