Republican Kirkpatrick wins Georgia state Senate district

ATLANTA (AP) - Republican Kay Kirkpatrick has won a state Senate seat representing several suburban Atlanta communities, keeping the district in GOP hands.

According to unofficial results of Tuesday's runoff election, Kirkpatrick defeated Democrat Christine Triebsch.

The district includes portions of Cobb and Fulton counties.

The seat opened up when former state Sen. Judson Hill, a Republican, resigned to run for Congress, triggering a special election. Triebsch and Kirkpatrick advanced to the runoff after an April election.

At the end of the legislative session, Republicans held 37 of 56 seats in the state Senate. All members of the General Assembly will be up for election in fall 2018.
