Family and friends gathered for a vigil Thursday for a man murdered in his own apartment.

Alex Newton, 30, came home for lunch on Halloween and walked in on a man burglarizing his apartment off Metropolitan Avenue in Atlanta. The two fought and the thief shot Newton multiple times, according to Atlanta Police.

Officers released new video of the suspected shooter, revealing how he got into Newton’s building, the Alexan EAV. In the video, the man can be seen outside holding a backpack. He reaches inside and pulls something out before breaking the lock on the door to gain entry.

Surveillance cameras also captured the man in the hallway and in the parking garage. Police are hoping someone out recognizes him and reaches out to detectives.

Meanwhile, family members have set up an online account to raise money for a reward, which currently stands at $25,000.

Newton's mother, Beth Newton, spoke with FOX 5's Marissa Mitchell during the community vigil.

"The support helps to make this a little more bearable because it is such an unforeseen, senseless
thing we are having to deal with," Newton said.

Trey Newton, the victim's brother, agrees.

"It was a bad situation to begin with but the guy needs to be caught because it could be somebody else next time," Trey Newton said.
