Arrest made in beloved veteran, yoga teacher's murder

- Atlanta Police said they have made an arrest in the murder of 58-year-old Randy Smith, a veteran and beloved Decatur yoga teacher.

Family members said Sunday, Smith went to check on his rental property off Joseph E. Lowery Boulevard SW, when he was found gunned down and his car stolen.

Police would not say a possible motive, but relatives said Smith had confronted people inside the home days before, who were not supposed to live there.

Relatives tell FOX 5, the property is a historical home where Dr. Benjamin Mays once lived, and was once a flower shop where Smith and his wife Angela first met.

"It's been very difficult. Our community is devastated," said Still Hot Yoga owner Eric Jennings. Smith had been a student at the Decatur studio for years, before he finally became a Bikram yoga instructor after retiring as a Sergeant Major and disabled veteran from the Georgia Army National Guard.

Smith found a new line of work as an information security professional for the U.S. State Department, while teaching yoga.

"It's hard. I think we are all in shock," said studio manager Rebecca Rumpf.  "He made [students] feel welcome and at home. He was a favorite," Rumpf said.

The website for Still Hot Yoga has a tribute to Smith.

Family members said Smith leaves behind his wife, Angela, three children and four grandchildren.

Still Hot Yoga in Decatur plans to have a tribute yoga session for Smith at 10:00 a.m. and raise funds for his family; details:

Smith's funeral will be at at Saint Philip A.M.E. Church at 240 Candler Rd, Atlanta GA 30317, on Sept. 19.  Smith will be buried with military honors at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton.
