Unattended luggage often left without visible security at airport

Security personnel are supposed to ensure airport bags are picked up by the person who owns the luggage.

That does happen. But in too many instances security falls short, according to airport workers.

Why is that? The airport spokesman does not have an answer for what FOX 5 cameras saw Tuesday afternoon.

At the North Terminal carousel area, there were several workers in green security vests checking travelers to verify luggage. Very little coverage was seen on the South Terminal, which is the primary spot for Delta.

Reese McCranie, with the airport, said the airlines are responsible for security in those two areas. Companies provide the coverage for the airlines.

The airport spokesperson added there likely would be security added that’s not visible at all time of day, including undercover Atlanta police officers.

By the numbers, 105 million passengers annually, the 40 reported luggage thefts are a minuscule number.

Of course, if it is your bag that’s stolen the city airport stats won’t make you feel any better.
