ATHENS, Ga. - Two police officers were injured in a fight with an escaped felon in Athens-Clarke County.
Lieutenant Christopher Nichols and SPO Gregory Gilchrist are recovering from injuries when a scuffle with a wanted man escalated quickly Tuesday afternoon at the Dollar General on Lexington Road in Athens.
Police said the officers were attempting to arrest Marvin Terrell Taylor, 42, for a felony escape warrant out of Clarke County at the.
"He was in a work release program and failed to return. After 12 hours, when you fail to return to the program, a warrant is issued for your arrest," said Athens-Clarke County Police Spokesman Epifanio Rodriguez.
Body camera video recorded on Lt. Christopher Nichols shows Taylor run away when Nichols approaches him. Officers deployed a Taser, but the probes didn't make full contact and Talyor was able to remove them and run, according to police.
"When officers attempted to restrain Taylor physically, he began to fight. It was during the struggle to arrest Taylor when Lt. Nichols received fractures to a finger and SPO Gilchrist injured his right elbow. They'll need some time to recover, but they'll be back on the streets again soon," said Rodriguez.
Sharma Smith praised the officers for the way they handled the arrest.
"It's just sad that you can't even go to the store now without something like this breaking out right in front of your kids. I'm glad the guy was arrested and no one was seriously hurt or killed. I think the officer handled it well," Smith, a frequent Dollar General customer, told FOX 5's Portia Bruner.
