Officials at Fort Stewart released the following statement Wednesday evening:

"Fort Stewart emergency officials responded to a tornado that touched down here about 4:55 p.m. today.

"No injuries reported, but significant damage is reported across the installation.  Initial assessment indicated that numerous vehicles were destroyed.  Stewart officials report minimum to severe damage to, landscape, and power grid.  Forty to fifty people were displaced from the housing areas and are being sheltered in Fort Stewart lodging.

"Currently, power has been restored to the installation, except for areas in the vicinity of Diamond Elementary School, the North Bryan Village housing area, and portions of the Eisenhower Terrace housing area.

"Fort Stewart Garrison has activated the Emergency Family Assistance center at Army Community Service, Building 87 and will remain open throughout the evening.

"The Directorates of Public Works and Emergency Services continue to clear roads and conduct damage assessments. People are encouraged to avoid areas with debris and downed power lines. ...

"Diamond Elementary School is the only school closed tomorrow. Expect all other normal installation operations and hours to resume in the morning."
