A SWAT standoff which shut down a Gwinnett County neighborhood for most of the afternoon on Wednesday has ended peacefully.

Police said it started when deputies with the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office were trying to serve a man eviction-type paperwork at a home on Saratoga Drive near Lawrenceville just before 2 p.m.

Police said deputies met a woman in the driveway at the home who told them the man for which they were looking was inside the home. Deputies briefly spoke with the man from the foyer as he stood atop the stairs, but police said he then retreated into a bedroom. Deputies then said they heard four gunshots inside the home.

The Gwinnett County Police Department SWAT Team and Negotiators were called to the scene. After several hours, they were able to talk the man into putting down his weapon and surrendering to officers.

The man’s name and potential charges have not yet been released.

Police blocked off a large portion of the neighborhood to allow for the safety of residents and law enforcement during the operation.

No injuries were reported.
