A house fire early Thursday morning claimed the life of a senior citizen.

Firefighters were called out to a home on Kimball Road in southwest Atlanta just after 12 a.m. First responders arrived to heavy smoke and flames coming out of windows.

Officials told FOX 5 five family members escaped unharmed. Those family members told firefighters the senior citizen was still inside.

Firefighters found the man dead in a lower level room. Investigators believe that's where the blaze broke out, but they aren't sure of the cause.

No firefighters suffered any injuries battling the blaze, which left considerable damage to both the upper and lower levels of the home.
