The Red Cross is helping several families that were forced to flee as flames ripped through the Cornerstone Apartments in Doraville.

DeKalb County firefighters arrived at the apartments off of Winters Park Drive just after 12:30 p.m. to find flames shooting through the roof. Residents told FOX 5’s Portia Bruner they were grateful to the maintenance workers who rushed from door-to-door alerting neighbors about the fire brewing inside Building 1900.

All of the residents escaped without injuries, according to DeKalb County Fire Captain Eric Jackson.

“Fortunately, the Cornerstone property management is working with the residents to get them new homes here at the complex,” Cpt. Jackson told Bruner.

Four units were destroyed or severely damaged and we'll have to be demolished, according to investigators.

"We're really glad our firefighters were able to fight these flames and get ahead of the flames before they spread out of control. It's going to take some time to figure out what started this fire, but that's why we brought in investigators from the ATF," said Captain Jackson.
