The smoke from wildfires across The South has been settling over north Georgia this week. The hazy skies over metro Atlanta are a reminder of the firefighters battling several blazes. The dry conditions with no rain in the forecast and the change in seasons make battling the wildfires difficult, but the job became tougher Thursday.

Fire tore through the woods, dried grass and pine straw in Rabun County Thursday. Authorities believe two massive fires could be the work of an arsonist who is still on the loose. Both fires were estimated to be about 150 acres each as of early Thursday evening.

FOX 5’S Patty Pan got a look at one of the fires near Tallulah River Road, escorted by the sheriff. Flames were low to the ground and some areas were smoldering, but it was clear the fires were not going to die down anytime soon.

Firefighters said they have both contained, but not out. Wind and the continued dry conditions could mean there could be more fires like these.

Authorities said they are actively searching for a possible arsonist before another one is set. Descriptions given to the sheriff’s office vary.

“We have received several different descriptions of vehicles, but some of it varies, some of it is not exact, but we are looking into it. Also, we have got extra parole on. We have got officers coming in to help secure the areas and stop anyone that they feel is not supposed to be in that area,” said Rabun County Sheriff Frank Andrews.

Authorities are asking anyone who sees something or someone suspicious to take down the car make, model and license plate and call 911.

A burn ban is still in effect for the community.
