Putnam Co. authorities investigate murder, abduction

Putnam Co. authorities have enlisted the help of the Federal Bureau of Investigation to assist them in what appears to be a murder and abduction case in Greensboro.

According to the Putnam County Sheriff's Department, the body of 88-year-old Russell Dermond was located, by friends, at a home in the Great Waters Community on Lake Oconee around 10 a.m. on Tuesday morning.

Authorities say then they found the body of Russell Dermond he had been decapitated. The head of Mr. Dermond's has not yet been located.

Shirley Dermond, the wife of Mr. Dermond has not been located, at this time. The Sheriff said that he hopes and prays she is still alive but based on her husband he is concerned.

They think she may have been abducted sometime between Friday, May 2 and Sunday, May 4. This is also the time they believe Mr. Dermond was killed.

Officials say Shirley Dermond is an 87-year-old white female, about 5'2" and around 148 pounds.

At a press conference on Thursday, the Putnam County Sheriff's office confirmed Russell Dermond was decapitated. The Sheriff said it was most likely post mortem.

The Sheriff also said there is nothing to suggest Shirley Dermond is the suspect regarding her husband's murder, but no one has been ruled out at this point.

Anyone who may have seen Shirley Dermond is being encouraged to call the Putnam County Sheriff's Office in Eatonton, GA  at 706-485-8557.
