The group was protesting against the "Old Joe" monument. The rally is coordinated with the many protests occurring across the country on Saturday in response to the violence in Charlottesville last weekend.

The monument in Gainesville was built in 1909 by the General James Longstreet Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

Later in the afternoon, authorities arrived on the scene in gear and moved protesters away from the monument.

Matthew Wolfsen was in Gainesville during the protest and posted a video, as well as his comments on the protest.

"Both the protesters and the counter protesters were calm and even engaged in good quality discourse (which I recorded and will publish eventually) until the police showed up," said Wolfsen.
