DULUTH, Ga. - Duluth Police say a used car salesman wasn't truthful when it came to two cars he sold, and they think there are more victims out there.
They allege that Jason Demetro, who worked with United Liquidators, rolled back odometers to show much lower mileage numbers than the cars actually had.
"The suspect is on Craigslist posting pics of vehicles with lower miles, taking pictures of odometers that states he has 85, 80,000 miles, whatever it is," Duluth police officer Ted Sadowski said. "It's then found out through Carfax that it actually has 200,000 miles."
Police say Demetro operated out of a small office space. There, officers say he would show the customers the vehicle, then present them with an altered Carfax report.
"It makes it almost seem more legitimate," Sadowski said.
But if the customer ran the report on their own, they would have seen the number not adding up.
Demetro would alter the bill of sale, according to police.
"They will purchase it for this amount, like a higher amount, but then actually put on the bill of sale that it was less than that, because when you hit a threshold then you have to pay taxes on it," Sadowski said. "So what he does is put the lower [price] on there so he doesn't have to file for taxes."
Police say they are aware of two cases, but they know there are more victims out there.
"You're buying your first car, just starting driving, parents may give you a car and you're trying to save up, save up, save for this car and then you find out this one is a really great price for 85,000 miles on it," Sadowski said. "Then you get it and you or your parents or whoever does a Carfax and finds out it's 300,000 miles and now the thing broke down five miles from where you bought it. Unfortunately when you go to owner they're long gone."
If you bought a car from Demetro and believe this could have happened to you, Duluth Police are asking you to call them.
