Gwinnett County detectives have arrested a suspect they say is responsible for the murder of a man whose remains were found two years after he went missing.

In 2016, a deer hunter was walking through some woods in unincorporated Auburn when he discovered a human skull about 200 yards from Bailey Road and Union Grove Circle. After a search, police discovered other bones found nearby.

Eventually the body was identified as 54-year-old Michael Jones, who had been reported missing by his family in 2014.

Now, police have arrested 41-year-old David Thacker for Jones' murder. Police say that Thacker was a person of interest early on in the investigation since they said Thacker and Jones were "known to have had a disagreement around the time Jones was reported missing."

After new information, detectives obtained a warrant for Thacker's arrest. He was also in custody on charges unrelated to the murder.

Thacker will be transferred to Gwinnett County Detention Center and has been charged with aggravated assault and felony murder.
