Police: Speeding car pins grandmother at gas station

- A 61-year-old grandmother is in critical condition after DeKalb Police said she was pinned to a gas pump in a multi-car crash, and three people in the responsible vehicle jumped out and fled.

Police said around 6:05 p.m. at the BP gas station off Evans Mill Road and Covington Highway, a gray Chevy Malibu speeding and driving recklessly into the station struck a blue pick-up truck, which then hit a grandmother's burgundy SUV and pinned her to a gas pump.

"They were driving with a high rate of speed," DeKalb Police spokesperson Shiera Campbell said. "They were driving recklessly, which resulted in the damage of several vehicles as well as a woman being critically injured."

The woman's two grandchildren were inside her car and were unharmed. Family members tell FOX 5 the children were 4 and 8 years old.

Police are searching with K-9s and patrols for what they believe to be three juveniles who fled from the scene.

Witnesses saw the grandmother placed on a stretcher and taken to the hospital.

Family members tell FOX 5, the woman has severe internal bleeding, broken ribs, and possibly needs a limb amputated.

"She has a fractured hip. They're going to amputate her foot. She had to have stitches in her mouth," said Ashley Barber, the victim's daughter.

Witnesses watched the large crime scene as police shut down the gas station and searched through the numerous wrecked vehicles.

"It was a selfish thing to do what he did – to be driving the way that he did,," said one witness, about the driver and the passengers who fled and didn't stop to help the grandmother.

As police search for suspects, Barber is grateful to the bystanders who rushed to help her family after the accident.

"The guys, I don't know his name, they said he came and lifted the truck off my mom, got her, pulled her out of there," she said. "And then the ladies ... they came and got my children and kept them until I came. It was just really nice."
