Police arrest teen accused of stealing car, kidnapping ex-girlfriend

Police confirm they have arrested Trevor Rankin, of Cleveland, Georgia. The 17-year-old is accused of stealing a car in Blairsville and kidnapping his ex-girlfriend.

Brooke Howard told police she broke up with Rankin a few days ago and said he showed up at her house Sunday evening around 9:00 and forced her into his car.

“He threw me into his car and grabbed me by the hair as I was trying to get out the door,” Howard said.

Howard's mother was home at the time and said she looked out just as her daughter was being forced into the car.

“I saw him grab my daughter and put her down and say 'I'm going to kill you'” said Danyal Trevarthen.

Howard said for nearly two hours she was in the car with Rankin pleading for him to let her go. She told police he was driving erratically at speeds over 100 miles per hour.

“He just kept getting faster and faster because he thought the cops were behind him,” said Howard.

Howard said eventually they ran out of gas and pulled into a Texaco on Cleveland Highway in Gainesville. Howard said two men realized something was wrong, and helped her get out of the car. She said she ran into the store.

Authorities said Rankin ditched the car and took off running. Authorities said he's now in police custody and is being held at the White County Sheriff's Office.

Ahead of Rankin's arrest, Howard's parents feared he would try to snatch their daughter again.

“I'm pretty sure he will, he's obsessed with her, I'm pretty sure he's going to try to come back,” said Trevarthen.
