A CSX train traveling to Savannah from Memphis hit a pedestrian Saturday afternoon.

It happened just before 12:30 p.m. on the tracks near East Ponce De Leon Avenue and Church Street.

Dekalb County emergency personnel responded to the scene and told FOX 5 multiple adults were trying to cross the tracks. Two of the individuals made it, but the third was hit by the train and killed.

FOX 5 reached out to CSX who released the following statement: "Our thoughts are with everyone impacted by this tragic incident and we will work to support local law enforcement as they investigate."

Dekalb County Police told FOX 5 the investigation is now in the hands of Clarkston Police.

The train consisted of two locomotives and 50 rail cars. The train crew was not injured.

FOX 5 asked CSX for a statement in regards to pedestrian and train safety.

CSX's Rob Doolittle said, "Train tracks are dangerous places, and pedestrians should only cross them at designated road crossings. It is never safe to walk along tracks. Trains can come from either direction at any time and modern freight trains are very quiet when they are approaching."
