Police: Officer's wife shot him dead before killing herself

STATESBORO, Ga. (AP) - Police in Georgia say an officer was shot dead by his new wife, who then killed herself.

News outlets cite a release from Statesboro police that says Statesboro Advanced Patrol Officer Ian Huggins was killed early Sunday in an apparent murder-suicide. Police say Rebecca Boyett Huggins shot herself in the head moments after officers responded to reports of shots fired.

Ian Huggins had suffered multiple gunshot wounds. Responders attempted to revive both of them at the scene, and they were transported to a hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

Police say the couple was married Feb. 14 and Huggins left behind a son and daughter.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is handling the case.
