Police: Motorcyclist hit by van after high-speed chase on I-85

A high-speed chase led to a horrific accident after police say a motorcyclist tried to escape police by jumping a median wall on Interstate 85.

The incident happened on Sunday at around 11:23 a.m. when a trooper saw a motorcycle driving over 100 miles per hour on Interstate 75 northbound.

Police say the trooper tried to stop the driver, but he kept on driving, eventually getting off I-75 onto University Avenue and ending up on I-85 southbound.

When the driver passed Cleveland Avenue, police say he rear-ended an SUV and was ejected from his motorcycle. On foot, he jumped over the median wall straight into the path of a minivan, according to police.

Officials declared the motorcycle driver dead on the scene. The driver of the SUV also complained of injury and the minivan's driver was treated for glass debris.

After an investigation, police discovered the motorcycle driver was wanted in Fayette County and that their motorcycle did not have a valid tag.

Two northbound lanes of I-85 had been closed after the accident. They have since been reopened.
