Police: Man shot, killed confronting dangerous car thief

- A man is dead after trying to stop a thief from stealing his car Friday afternoon, according to police.

It happened in the Avalon Mobile Home Park located in the 6200 block of Tara Boulevard in Jonesboro around 12:35 p.m. Clayton County Police said officers arrived at the scene to find a man suffering from a gunshot wound. He was rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital where he later died.

Witnesses told police a man in his 20s wearing a red shirt exchanged gunfire with the victim after trying to steal his car, according to investigators.

The vehicle is described as a gray 2003 4-door Honda Civic with Georgia tag RKG 8895. It was recovered late Friday night along Interstate 675 in DeKalb County. Investigators said they will be bringing it back to Clayton County to process for evidence.

The name of the 44-year-old victim has not yet been released.
