DECATUR, Ga. - DeKalb County police believe a lover’s quarrel led to a double shooting in Decatur which killed one person and injured another.
The shooter, identified as Jaren Sullivan, 32, is charged with murder and two counts of aggravated assault.
The incident occurred in the 1300 block of Kimlie Lane about 10:45 a.m. on Tuesday. DeKalb County police say woman went to the residence to pick up her three-year-old child when Sullivan, the woman's ex-boyfriend, shot and killed her new boyfriend, 32-year-old Marques Dockery. Investigators said Sullivan emptied his gun before going back inside, reloading his semi-automatic gun and coming back out to shoot more rounds. Police say this time he shot the woman's brother.
“Pow, pow, pow, pow,” neighbor Wilford Copeland described what he witnessed from his upstairs window Tuesday morning. “I was about to take a shower when I heard 5 to 10 shots and then I looked out the shutters and saw a person run out and fall in the cul de sac.”
Police said the mother went to pick up her child from the father’s home when the shooting occurred. Investigators said the mother’s two children were just feet away from the gunfire.
“The one-year-old was in the car, the 3-year-old was in the vicinity. We believe in the house,” said Shiera Campbell, DeKalb County Police Department.
The woman’s boyfriend, died in the passenger seat of the mother’ car, as they tried to flee the scene. Emergency officials rushed the woman’s 25-year-old brother to an area hospital. He was listed in serious, but stable condition Tuesday afternoon.
Sullivan turned himself into police without further incident.
The names of the others involved have not yet been released.
