Police investigating social media threats to Sweetwater Middle School

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. - Authorities are investigating social media threats made to Sweetwater Middle School on Thursday morning. The threats have not been found to be credible, according to Bernard Watson, the Director of Community Relations at Gwinnett County Public Schools.

"We have found no credible evidence to suggest that the threats are real," said Watson in an email to FOX 5. "However as a precaution, there are additional SRO's at the school today. In addition, the principal has notified parents about the situation."

Gwinnett County Public Schools' gave FOX 5 a copy of the letter the principal of Sweetwater Middle School sent out to parents this morning. It reads:

Dear Sweetwater Middle School Parents/Guardians:

I am writing to share with you that we are aware of a social media posting that directed a threat toward our school. I felt it was important for you to know that while we do not have any evidence to substantiate this threat, we are taking it seriously. Our school resource officers are investigating and are working to identify the source of this post. In addition, we will have a very visible police presence on campus today. 

While there is no evidence that there is anything to this posting, these types of threats can be very disruptive to a school community. I want to reassure you that providing our students and staff with a safe school environment is a priority. There is nothing more important to me and to our school than your child. I know that their safety is a priority we all share. Our focus will continue to be on teaching and learning today and we will continue with all school activities as normally scheduled.

As authorities continue to investigate the source of the threats, Watson assures that all safety precautions are being taken, and the responsible party will face legal action.

"Whenever we learn about such threats our SROs immediately investigate and try and determine who is behind them," said Watson. "We also take the precaution to ensure the school, its students and staff are safe. If the investigation uncovers who made the threats, the responsible party will face the appropriate legal and/or school disciplinary action."
