BROOKHAVEN, Ga. - Brookhaven Police are investigating the possibility that some sort of drug deal led to the fatal shooting of a man in the parking deck of a Brookhaven apartment complex Thursday night.
Friday morning, the Brookhaven Police Department identified the victim as 26-year-old Travis Ridley.
Ridley died at the Avana Uptown Apartments on Clairmont Road. Police said responding officers found him suffering from more than one gunshot wound. He was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
According to police, gun violence started in a third-floor unit then spilled out to the parking deck on the same floor. A resident said he heard the gunfire outside his apartment door.
"The only thing you heard was six to eight shots let off, ‘pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop,’" said the resident.
The resident said a couple minutes after the gunfire, he heard the voice of a very distraught woman.
"Two minutes later you just hear crying, you just hear crying, ‘my boyfriend, my boyfriend, my boyfriend,’" he said.
Brookhaven Police told FOX 5 News detectives quickly focused on the area where the shooting occurred.
"Our detectives are processing the third floor parking deck and building for evidence, interviewing people that were in the area looking for potential witnesses," said Major Brandon Gurley.
Major Gurley said detectives are still trying to determine why Ridley was shot multiple times, but believe the shooting involved some type of drug activity.
Gurley said a purple Challenger, removed from the crime scene, is connected to the murder, but would not say exactly how. Police are asking witnesses to step forward to help find the shooter.
Brookhaven Police said they will review any available video surveillance from the apartment complex and the surrounding area to find the killer. Detectives think the person they are looking to speak with could have fired their weapon after the victim pulled out his own gun.
Police said a gun was found at the scene, and believe it belonged to Ridley.
Neither Ridley or the person who shot him lived at the apartment complex, according to police.
