NORCROSS, Ga. - A 14-year-old boy was seriously injured Monday after Gwinnett County police said he accidentally shot himself in the head while playing with a stolen handgun.
The victim has been identified as Fredis Albayero-Rodriguez.
The shooting happened in the 1400 block of Wingfoot Way in the Norcross area a little before 6 p.m. Monday. A spokesperson for the Gwinnett County Police Department said the teen was visiting a friend’s house when the shooting took place. Police said the victim and his 15-year-old friend were sitting on a couch when the gun went off, striking the victim. The friend tried to unload the gun after the shooting, but it fired a second time, this time without injuring anyone.
The 14-year-old boy was rushed to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite where he underwent emergency surgery on his head wound. He was listed in serious condition Tuesday, according to police.
Officers said they recovered a .40 caliber Smith and Wesson handgun which had been stolen from Marietta in June. The owner of the handgun, Winifred Denise Baker, is an employee at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital in Cobb County. Ms. Baker said someone took the gun from her glove compartment inside her car back in June. She narrowed the dates from June 19 to June 23. Investigators are not sure how the boys came into possession of the weapon.
Police said other people were inside the home in different rooms at the time of the shooting.
No charges are expected against the adults at the home, officers said. Police are still investigating the circumstances of the shooting.
