Some brave local folks started the New Year off by taking a frigid plunge.

This group met at Red Top Mountain, ran a few miles, and then jumped into Lake Allatoona for their version of the Polar Bear Plunge.

There were prizes for best costume, loudest shriek when you hit the water, and who could stay in the lake the longest.

FOX 5 Atlanta reporter Denise Dillon and her daughters jumped in.

Denise said the official temperature, “cold".  All participants were awarded a "plunger" for taking the plunge.
