A plan to use iPads at one Cobb County High School has stirred up concern among some parents.

School leaders at Walton County High School are encouraging parents to purchase the devices for their students to use in the classrooms. Some parents support the initiative. While others consider it unfair to have to shell out hundreds of dollars so their children keep up with their peers.

The Cobb County School District released the following statement to FOX 5 Monday addressing concerns:

“Walton High School is one of two conversion charter schools within the Cobb County School District. The Walton charter existed prior to the Cobb County School District becoming an IE2 (Investing in Educational Excellence) district. Due to Walton being a charter, they understandably have some flexibility in how technology will be used to support teaching and learning on their campus.

According to Walton’s administration, the iPad initiative is not a requirement, rather, another instructional tool for student use. Students also have the ability to bring their own device for instructional purposes.

iPads in the media center are available for student check-out as needed during their class periods. The purchase of additional iPads is being considered by the Walton Foundation.”
