Open house held at John Lewis Elementary School

The DeKalb County School District held an open house Wednesday for a school named after a prominent civil rights leader.

More than 900 students and parents came out to John Lewis Elementary School.

The district broke ground on the new site in March.

The new building will include collaborative learning spaces and a student courtyard.

The school's principal said students the new building provides more opportunities for students to learn.

Members of the school district said this is the first public elementary school in the nation to be named after Congressman Lewis.
