Judge denies bond for Atlanta police shooting suspect

ATLANTA - A judge denied bond for one of two men charged with shooting an Atlanta Police officer over the weekend.

Officers said the bold attack happened when a uniformed officer responded to a home invasion at the Allure at Brookwood Condominiums around 3:30 Saturday afternoon. Investigators said a woman called 911 to report someone was trying to break into her apartment.

According to police, the officer, whose named has not yet been released, was approaching the unit as suspects Michael Thomas and Antonio Bell were exiting the residence. 

Police said Thomas fired at the officer who tried to take cover, but was shot in the abdomen area. The officer returned fire with his city issued Glock 22, 40 caliber firearm.

Thomas was shot and injured. Both he and the officer were rushed to Grady Hospital.

The unidentified officer was wearing a bullet proof vest and Atlanta Police said that vest saved his like.

Bell, Thomas' co defendant, made his first court appearance late Monday morning. FOX 5 was there as a public defender held a blue folder over his face.

Magistrate Judge James Altman denied bond on six of the seven charges. 

Thomas will appear in court on June 20. He remains at Grady Memorial Hospital.
