Officer narrowly avoids death after car totaled in crash

- A Sandy Springs police officer was nearly killed when a drunk woman slammed into his police cruiser. He stepped away from his car to help someone else who had been in an accident around 2 a.m. Sunday morning when the crash happened.

The car is totaled from the crash. Both axles are broken, the rear door is ripped off, and the airbags deployed throughout the car.

Officers were working on Interstate 285 to clear an accident near Glenridge when the woman crashed into the cruiser that was parked on the shoulder.

The Sandy Springs Police Department is asking the public to be more mindful of officers and other first responders working on the road. This time, it was only a car lost, and officers say they are grateful no one was hurt.

Sandy Springs Police say the woman was driving impaired. She was charged with a DUI, driving with a suspended license and several other charges.
