GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. - A local mother expressed outrage on social media after, she says, she was humiliated by a stylist while breastfeeding her son at a hair salon in Gwinnett County.
Amanda Santos said the incident happened Sunday at the SmartStyle Salon inside Walmart on Centerville Highway in Snellville.
She said she breastfed her one-year-old son while getting her hair washed. But the problem started when she was moved to the front of the business, facing WalMart customers, Santos stressed.
She told FOX 5 the stylist handed her a towel to cover her child because of onlookers.
"When I moved into the chair...she said 'people are looking at you and opening their mouths,'" Santos recalled. "...I said, 'I don't mind' and she said she minded because she's the manager."
Santos said she went back and forth with the employee before storming out. According to Georgia law, a mother has the right to breastfeed her baby in public where she is allowed to be with her child.
"All I want to know is that the corporation educated their staff so breastfeeding mothers like me will feel welcomed," Santos added.
SmartStyle Salons released the following statement to FOX 5 Wednesday about the ordeal:
"At SmartStyle, we are committed to welcoming everyone who comes into our salons,
and it is our policy to welcome and accommodate breastfeeding mothers. We take great
care to create an atmosphere that is comfortable for all of our customers; it is not our
intent for any customer to be uncomfortable in our salons. The local salon owner is
following up with the customer and, in light of this situation, we have met with our
salon team and revisited customer service expectations. We hope that the family will
consider giving us another opportunity."
