A mother of a 22-month-old baby and her boyfriend are facing charges after the heartbreaking death of the toddler.

DeKalb County Police say Ceddreka Davis left her little boy alone with her boyfriend, Kevin Stewart, at a motel.

A few days later, the toddler was brain dead in the hospital with injuries so horrific he died early Friday afternoon.

According to the arrest warrant obtained by FOX 5, Davis left her child with Stewart for nearly two days.

"When she came back, the child was unconscious and the boyfriend was allegedly performing CPR on the child," DeKalb Police spokeswoman Shiera Campbell said.

The baby went to a hospital, where it was described as being brain dead and on a ventilator.

According to Stewart's arrest warrants, detectives believe he assaulted the child several times in the head, torso, arms, and legs.

The warrant goes on to say that the baby's injuries included brain bleeds, a fractured jaw, bruising to his face and chest and mouth, and lacerations to the liver.

On Saturday, Stewart made his first appearance in court. During the hearing, he asked the judge why his bond amount was set so high.

"Well I can imagine there's a number of reasons for that," the judge replied. "Maybe the charges are amended to include a murder possibly and I don't think that's an unreasonable bond for the aggravating facts of this case.

Stewart faces felony charges of first-degree child cruelty and aggravated battery – charges that could be upgraded.

But investigators say Stewart wasn't solely to blame.

They say even though Davis wasn't at the motel at the time, she has been charged in her son's death as well.

"She may have been aware of the abuse and that's why she's being charged," Campbell said.

Police believe the abuse had been ongoing.

Both Davis and Stewart are being held at the DeKalb County Jail.
