MLB: Braves' Hector Olivera suspended for 82 games

ATLANTA - Major League Baseball said it has suspended Atlanta Braves outfielder Hector Olivera for 82 games.

MLB said Olivera will be suspended without pay through August 1. The suspension is retroactive to April 30. Olivera told MLB he will not appeal the decision.

The suspension stems from his arrest at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Arlington, Va. on April 13 for assault and battery.

The Atlanta Braves released the following statement Thursday:

“The Braves fully support Major League Baseball’s decision regarding Hector Olivera. The Club will have no further comment on the matter at this time.”

The Braves acquired the 31-year-old infielder in a trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers last season. Olivera signed a 6-year, $62.5 million contract with the Dodgers last year after defecting from Cuba.
