Shoplifting suspects pulls knife on Marietta officer

The actions of an alleged shoplifter set off a flurry of police activity Tuesday in Cobb County.

According to Marietta Police, employees at the Walmart on Cobb Parkway South called at around 11:30 a.m. to report two men who tried to shoplift about $1,000 worth of merchandise.

The responding officer tried to handcuff the two men, but one had a knife.

"The officer was able to apprehend one of the suspects," explained Officer Chuck McPhilamy with the Marietta Police Department.  "The other reached for the knife and then fled on foot.  At that point, it was a divide and conquer."

Other officers followed the suspect for a short time before he crashed his truck and took off running into some trees.

With the help of nearby agencies, police were able to find and arrest the man after searching for about four hours.

Investigators have not released the names of the two suspects, nor what charges they face.

Dobbins Air Force Base and Life College were placed on locked down while authorities searched for the suspect in the area.
