Police said a drug deal turned into a carjacking and a shooting in a southeast Atlanta apartment complex Wednesday afternoon.

The incident started in the 500 block of Cleveland Avenue inside the Pavilion Place apartments around 1:20 p.m. Atlanta Police said a man had tried to buy drugs from two individuals, but the pair ended up robbing the man of his car.

Investigators said once the man fired into the vehicle after the men stole it, striking a 20-year-old man. The men ran from the scene.

Police said they found the injured man on Connell Avenue, on the other side of the complex. He was taken to the hospital, but was said to be alert, conscious, and breathing at the time.

Police were able to locate all three men and are still investigating possible charges against them.

Officers said it was lucky that no one else in the complex was injured given the time of day.
