BARROW COUNTY, Ga. - A 9-year-old boy has died following a shooting at his Winder home Wednesday afternoon, according to the Barrow County Sheriff's Office.
Sheriff Jud Smith said the shooting occurred around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at 2556 Avalon Court. Deputies said they found the young man with a gunshot wound inside the residence.
"At the time of the incident we do know the mother, father, and younger sibling were at home. No one heard anything at this point or knows what happened. We are not certain as to whether it was an accident or if it was self-inflicted," Sheriff Smith revealed.
The Yargo Elementary third grader was flown out to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston, where he later passed away.
The sheriff said investigators are trying to determine what the boy's state of mind was.
"That is why we were doing the forensics with the students, the teachers, friends, kids he hung out with on the playground," Sheriff Smith explained.
Investigators are still trying to piece together what exactly happened, but they say a preliminary investigation reveals there will be no criminal charges in the case.
