Police said a deadly late night shooting in the parking lot of a Buckhead shopping center Thursday was not random.

It happened in the parking lot of the Kroger located at 3330 Piedmont Rd NE a little before 10:30 p.m. Atlanta Police said the victim, 45-year-old Derrick Dukes, arrived at the store in a red Mercedes driven by a woman. Police said they were there to meet three men.

"There was a lot of people in the parking lot," said Lt. Ricardo Vazquez, Homicide Commander, Atlanta Police Department. "We don't know what the business transaction or whatever the case may have been."

Whatever the reason, something went wrong. Lt. Vazquez said video shows them talking and then it goes from words to violence; first into fist fights and then gunfire. Paramedics rushed the victim to Grady Memorial Hospital, but he did not survive.

"He didn't have a chance he was assaulted by three suspects," said Lt. Vazquez.

The gunmen fled in a small blue car that was last seen heading north on Piedmont. Atlanta Police are looking for two African-American men. One is 6-feet tall, thin, has dreads, and was wearing a white t-shirt. The other is 5'11" and was wearing a red shirt.

Cell phone video shows the man police believe was the primary aggressor, wearing a white sleeveless shirt.

After the shooting, everyone scattered, including the driver of the Mercedes.

"It was a black female. She was probably about 5’9”. She was wearing a white t-shirt hoody with black pants," said Lt. Vazquez.

Police are asking anyone who was at the Kroger around the time of the killing to come forward.

"The only thing we can infer from that is she might have some involvement, very preliminary. If you’re taking it step by step being elementary if she was not involved she would have called police because someone was assaulted and died," said Lt. Vazquez.

Anyone with information should contact the Atlanta Police Department or Atlanta Crime Stoppers.
