Man killed after shootout with police in DeKalb County

The search for two armed robbers ended in a gun battle with DeKalb County Police early Sunday.

Investigators say the pair robbed a Waffle House restaurant around 3 a.m. on Evans Mill Road. They left with cash. Hours later, a description of the vehicle involved in the robbery matched that of one parked outside a convenience store on Snapfinger Woods Drive.

The two men, police say, were inside Neighbor's Market when officers arrived. A gun battle followed, with one of the men firing at police from inside the store out through the window. Police returned fire. The gunman was killed. Police say they believe the gunman shot and killed himself, although the investigation continues. His alleged accomplice is now in custody.

The GBI is taking over the investigation since this is an officer-involved shooting. No one at the Waffle House or the convenience store was hurt.
