DECATUR, Ga. - The man charged with murdering a teen who sat in a car at a busy Decatur intersection went before a judge Monday afternoon.
Decatur Police charged 50-year old Simmie Reed with murder and two counts of aggravated assault.
The victim's mother, who was also shot, claims Reed pulled up to their car at a red light and began shooting. She spoke with FOX 5 News by phone and described the heartbreaking moments after that shooting.
Reed was taken into custody by the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office Fugitive Unit Friday in the 2300 block of Tyler Way without incident after investigators said they received a tip.
The shooting happened last Wednesday at the intersection of South Candler Street and Midway Road around 5:48 p.m. Investigators said Reed fired several shots as the sedan driver waited to turn onto Midway Road.
Reed was booked into the DeKalb County Jail and charged with one count of murder, two counts of aggravated assault with intent to murder, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He remained in custody as of late Monday evening.
The victim, 17-year-old Janae Owens, will be laid to rest in her home state of Louisiana. She and her family had just recently moved to the Atlanta area
