Man arrested in deadly hit and run make first appearance

The man accused in a deadly hit and run faced a Gwinnett County judge Wednesday.

Leonard Decouto, 51, made his first appearance on charges of first-degree vehicular homicide, felony hit and run and failure to maintain lane. Decouto turned himself in to police on Monday on those charges.

Investigators said Decouto was driving the U-Haul that struck and killed 79-year-old Tran Hong in Lawrenceville Sept. 10 as Hong was walking along the side of Johnson Road. Police said Decouto left Hong to die on the side of the road.

No word on Decouto’s next court appearance.
