Inmate hit by car, killed on Lawrenceville Highway

- An inmate on work detail has been hit and killed by a vehicle on Wednesday morning.

Officials say officers responded to a report of an accident at 9:42 a.m. on Lawrenceville Highway near the intersection of Lawrenceville Suwanee Road.

Police say that the inmate, 22-year-old Mableton resident Hunter O'Conner, was following his work detail bus on foot when he was hit by a car from behind. He died at the scene from his injuries.

The driver of the red passenger car, 44-year-old Jennifer Adkins of Buford, Georgia, was determined to be at fault for the accident. After an investigation police say that Adkins was distracted and didn't see O'Conner before the accident.

Adkins has been arrested and transported to the Gwinnett County Detention Center. She's been charged with second-degree vehicular homicide, distracted driving, and following too closely.
