The Georgia Department of Transportation has crews in the affected areas scouting roads and treating areas as needed.

Wednesday,GDOT closed the Richard B. Russell Scenic Highway and the Georgia Highway 180 Spur, both in Blairsville, because of the deteriorating brought by the winter weather. By Wednesday afternoon, Fannin County officials reported that roads were slick and dangerous. Moderate snow was falling there just after midday.

GDOT treated several roads Wednesday with a salt and gravel mix including Georgia Highways 183, 129, 17, 180, 60, and 2. Crews were out in Fannin County plowing the snow and ice off of Georgia Highways 515 and 60 to the Tennessee state line.

Earlier Wednesday morning, ice formed on Interstate 75 in northwest Georgia Wednesday morning, causing travel problems as the winter weather began to move into the state. Icy spots led to a series of crashes on Interstate 75 near the Cloud Springs Road exit in Catoosa County. Several tractor-trailers were involved in those accidents. Northbound lanes were shut down, and southbound traffic was moving very slowly in that area. Highway crews responded and cleared the worst of the ice in that area. The highway was re-opened and traffic was moving again by midday Wednesday. But Georgia DOT officials are reminding drivers to be cautious on roads across the north Georgia mountains where snow, sleet and freezing rain have fallen.
