The chairman of the Iowa Democratic Party said the 2016 caucus was the closest in the history of the event.

The Clinton campaign claimed victory early Tuesday morning, but the result was closer than most observers had expected. Addressing supporters Monday night, Clinton said, "I stand here tonight breathing a big sigh of relief. Thank you, Iowa!" The outcome brought back memories of her 2008 surprise defeat in Iowa at the hands of then Senator Barack Obama. Whatever the final numbers, Clinton and Sanders will win a nearly equal number of delegates to the Democratic convention from Iowa.

Tuesday morning, Sen. Sanders told supporters that his campaign will "astound the world again" as the fight for the Democratic nomination moves forward.

Former Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley struggled in Iowa, and suspended his campaign following Monday's results.

The Democratic campaign now moves on to New Hampshire, where a traditional primary will be held on Tuesday, February 9. Clinton and Sanders will likely square off in a debate in New Hampshire Thursday at the University of New Hampshire.
