Hapeville's butterfly statues return

Hapeville Police are willing to forgive and forget now that the city’s butterfly sculptures which were missing earlier this week have been returned.

The painted butterflies are all over Hapeville, part of a main street art project. Someone was apparently a big fan and stole them. Four of the butterflies were missing.

Police set a deadline of 10 a.m. Wednesday to return them with no questions asked and the butterflies returned. Otherwise, investigators would have turned to video to go after the thieves.

The butterflies were painted by residents and various civic groups and have themes. They were donated by a nonprofit group. They can be found on lamp posts and gardens throughout the city.

Since the butterflies were returned by the deadline, police said they will hold up to their end of the bargain and consider the case closed.
